San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Brock Purdy walked into the Levi’s Stadium auditorium for his post-contract signing press conference looking every bit the part of…Brock Purdy.
Dressed in 49ers’ sweats, as is on brand for the quarterback who doesn’t make himself bigger than the team, San Francisco’s franchise QB started by thanking God, his wife Jenna, the organization (John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan, Jed York), his agent and his family.
The deal is a five-year, $265 million contract extension, that includes $181 million in guaranteed money and has a no-trade clause. Not bad for the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
“There was no drama involved,” Purdy told the Bay Area media during a Wednesday press conference at Levi’s Stadium. “All those moments added up to where I had faith it’d get done, and these guys had my back. Last week, we knew we were at the number and just had to get a couple of things figured out in the language of the contract, and it was a go.”
Purdy was golfing with his wife, Jenna, and center Jake Brendel and his wife when his agent, Kyle Strongin of Range Sports, called to say the deal was done and to make sure to answer 49ers’ President of Football Operations/General Manager John Lynch’s FaceTime. QBs, they’re just like us.

The timing of the deal is notable, in that San Francisco is coming off three off-seasons of contract drama that did not get done until July, August and, in Nick Bosa’s case, the first week of the 2023 season. Although Purdy had previously expressed that he was hoping the contract would be done before the start of the off-season program, having it done before OTAs is a relief.
“Obviously, I was hopeful to get something done early, it would have been nice to have it done going into the offseason program as a whole, but there’s a process to it…” Purdy said. “[A]t the end of the day, I didn’t want to lose sight of the main goal here, knowing I’m going to be the quarterback of the team this year. I have to come in and get better and grow our locker room and help the new guys. I just wanted to be here from the jump and be the guy in there to continue to lead this place.”
The team also signed TE George Kittle and LB Fred Warner to extensions. Add in Trent Williams, Christian McCaffrey, Nick Bosa and Deommodore Lenoir, San Francisco has kept its core together, while infusing the team with newness and youth, but more on that in a minute.
During his three seasons in the league, Purdy has 9,518 passing yards, 64 touchdowns and a 67.5% completion rate. He led the 49ers to the playoffs in consecutive seasons, including the NFC Championship game his rookie year and the Super Bowl the subsequent year.
One of the things that has been notable in Purdy’s rise from Mr. Irrelevant to the 49ers’ QB1 for the next several years is the way his confidence and his demeanor has stayed the same. From his first postgame press conference on December 4, 2022, when he took over under center for an injured Jimmy Garoppolo, it was clear that Purdy possessed the confidence of a first-round pick and the demeanor of a veteran in the league. That has only increased.
Earlier this offseason, the 49ers parted ways with numerous free-agents. They have a new defensive, a new offensive and a new special teams coordinator. 11 draft picks are now a part of the team. Though Purdy expressed the difficulty in saying goodbye to teammates, he also acknowledged that the energy in the building feels different.
“Man, I was itching to come back, with the energy and mindset of guys,” Purdy said. “There’s a new kind of re-energized feeling around the facility.”
Purdy, an avid fisherman, said his first big purchase might be a bass boat.
Purdy’s last three off-seasons have included recovering from elbow surgery, recovering from a Super Bowl loss and getting married and this year’s contract negotiations. Now, he can exhale, maybe.
“It’s just something that I’ve learned, in the NFL, man, there’s always going to be something that you’re going to be going through or facing. It’s never gonna be perfect, it’s never gonna be easy, but I know who I am…my faith, it’s bigger than football…I think knowing that has allowed me to handle all the things that come my way, whether it’s a surgery, a contract, losing a big game, I know who I am, and it just fires me up to go and defy the odds after that.”
Consider the odds defied. And now, they concentrate on the football.
