The San Francisco 49ers have been a trading machine in the 2017 NFL Draft. After drafting cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon from the University of Colorado with the 66th pick, they traded the 67th pick to the New Orleans Saints for a 2nd round pick in 2018 and an additional 7th round pick this year. The 49ers are not messing around in upgrading their defense.
In 2016, Witherspoon was second-team All-Pac 12 in 2016 and led the country with 22 pass break ups. He also had an interception. The 49ers had a need at cornerback, and general manager John Lynch said that Witherspoon will compete for a starting spot.
Witherspoon didn’t start playing football until he was a senior in high school, so even though has been playing football a relatively short time, Witherspoon is ready.
“I think that’s what was intriguing to them is that yes I am capable,” said Witherspoon. “I’m exceptional right now, but I was telling them that my potential and what I’ll be in three years I think is what is really exciting for me as a player. And that’s kind of one of the reasons I keep grinding every day, and kinda my fuel is I’m interested to see how good I can be, as well as they are, and I think we can take this to a very special place.”
For Witherspoon, a Sacramento native who grew up with Arik Armstead, the location of his new football team could not be better.
“Being close to home is an incredible opportunity, as well as the type of defense that they play, pressure man, up in your face,” said Witherspoon. “When I came in for a visit they were asking me if I’ve adopted that role and if I’d be willing to continue that and I said, ‘Absolutely.’ And, again, just an opportunity to play for such a great organization, close to home with such a savvy defense and mentality. I think it’s going to be a great place for me.”
Lynch acknowledged that tackling is not Witherspoon’s strength, but it’s something the defensive back plans to work on and improve.
“That’s one of my weaknesses is in tackling,” said Witherspoon. “I don’t shy away from it, I think it’s just the experience, understanding how to get the guy down, and understanding when and where to shoot and take my opportunities and make plays. I think just becoming a more well-rounded player is what I aspire to be and I think that with experience that will come.”
