The San Francisco 49ers may have opened their season last night at Levi’s Stadium, but it’s not just football over there. Last week, the stadium revealed the Faithful Farm, which is a vegetable and herb garden on the NRG Solar Terrace at Levi’s. The farm boasts about 40 crops and herbs. Levi’s will be able to use said crops in the stadium clubs and at private events. This is another sure way of eating healthy during football season!

I was at the launch and the garden looks awesome. How did such an idea come about?

“Well, my one of my clients is Danielle York…I was doing a project at her home, and she found out about our work at AT&T Park,” said Farmscape’s Lara Hermanson. “…[S]he thought it would be awesome to have a similar project here that could serve as an extension of the STEM education program that the stadium does. This was just an extension of that vision that she had. I was thrilled for it. I think that it’s a great opportunity for the NFL…I thought it would be a great opportunity to introduce visitors to California cuisine and help local kids get the education from the garden that they so badly need.”

Per the 49ers, Centerplate works with Levi’s Stadium as a hospitality partner. The two have been working together in conjunction with the Salvation Army and Hunger at Home to bring unused food those who need it. The vegetables grown at the Faithful Farm will be part of that effort.

Farmscape oversees the crops, which sit on the NRG Solar Terrace at the stadium. It’s really cool, and at the event, I was able to sample food made with tomatoes, summer squash, and peppers, among other items. Everything was delicious, but my favorite dish was a crab and vegetable risotto.

The crops have been grown using recycled water, as the stadium to be very green. It’s a really cool idea, and one that could find its way to other NFL stadiums sooner rather than later.

“So far, in the last two months that we’ve been here growing, we’ve only been open to the staff, but everyday when we come up to work, there’s people who work here who are just out here roaming and gaping at the farm and can’t believe what we can grow,” said Hermanson. “I think that…it will continue to spread. It’s such a fun amenity for stadiums to have.”
