5 Fun Facts About Broncos’ Derek Wolfe

By November 17, 2017 No Comments

Broncos Country, who has emerged this season as your favorite player? It’s been a rough couple of weeks, I know, I know. So you may say, “You know, Ash, I can’t say I really like anyone right now.” Fair. But for me Derek Wolfe has emerged as my favorite player, especially after a very special military recognition of his brother-in-law who is currently serving, on Sunday.

It’s game day! Let’s get it! #DEFWU

1. Wolfe is from the rural town of Negley, Ohio and attended Beaver Local High School in Lisbon, Ohio. He is the only player in the school’s history ever to be drafted by the NFL.

2. Wolfe also wrestled in high school. As a senior, he went 32-2, earning a trip to the state championship.

3. His junior year at University of Cincinnati, he had $7 to his name, and the concern for money almost warranted what would have been the mistake of a lifetime: he considered entering the draft, but decided against it.

4. Which brings me to fact #4. The wait to leave for the league was the right decision because he tallied 70 tackles with 31 solo stops, 21.5 tackles for a loss and 9.5 sacks. He was declared the BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Year, a First Team All BIG EAST selection at defensive tackle, named to five All-American teams, and a Second Team All-American selection at defensive tackle by the Associated Press and Scout.com.

5. Derek Wolfe became the 36th overall selection in the 2012 NFL draft and has played the entirety of his career in Denver.
