After an extensive search, a number of blocked interviews, and a few thank you but no thank yous, it looks like the San Francisco 49ers have found an offensive coordinator, and they found him right on their own practice field (there’s a theme here, see HC Jim Tomsula and DC Eric Mangini). According to multiple reports. former Quarterbacks’ Coach Geep Chryst is the man the Niners are hoping will provide some divine intervention on offense. He has a good relationship with Colin Kaepernick and is a Jim Harbaugh holdover, which gives me hope that this hire has the potential to be a good one, maybe. As I’ve said about all of the coaching moves on this team, time will tell. While we’re waiting to be told, enjoy Five Fun Facts About Geep Chryst.
- Niner fans will always remember Vernon Davis’ awesome TD catch that beat the New Orleans Saints in the divisional round of the 2011 playoffs. That play was called by none other than Geep Chryst. Things are looking up!
- Chryst has been an integral part of the 49ers’ red zone offensive play calling. The 49ers ranked 29th in the league in red zone offense last year. Things are looking down.
- Geep’s given name is George Patrick Chryst.
- Chryst and his good friend Jim Harbaugh met when Harbaugh was in his first training camp in 1987 and Chryst was the ball boy. Chryst went on to become the Chicago Bear’s Director of Quality Control while Harbaugh was their QB, with the two working together again when Harbaugh played for San Diego. Chryst served as the 49ers’ QBs coach under Jim Harbaugh from 2011-2014.
- His brother is Paul Chryst, head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers, and his father was the athletic director and head football coach for The University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Football’s in his gold blood – literally.
I don’t know TT readers. I can speculate from now until September – and I probably will – but until next season, who really knows how well this team will do? Noooooobody.
