The San Francisco 49ers had a very productive Saturday, pulling off trades that improved their roster, addressed needs and lightened their salary cap load.

Trent Williams

The first of the day came when they traded a fifth-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft and a third-round pick in next year’s NFL Draft to Washington in exchange for OT Trent Williams. The seven-time Pro Bowler will replace LT Joe Staley who announced his retirement shortly after the trade.

Williams was the fourth pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and played four seasons under then-Washington offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

Matt Breida to the Miami Dolphins

Next up, the 49ers traded RB Matt Breida to the Miami Dolphins for a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft, which they in turn used to draft West Virginia OT Colton McKivitz.

Breida was in a crowded running back room that includes Jerick McKinnon, Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman and Jeff Wilson, Jr. Breida was a restricted free agent and signed his one-year, $3.259 million tender earlier this month. The 49ers will save that chunk of money against this year’s salary cap.

Marquise Goodwin to the Philadelphia Eagles

The 49ers had been upfront that they were looking for a new home for WR Marquise Goodwin, and they found it with the Philadelphia Eagles. The 49ers and the Eagles also flipped sixth-round picks, with Philadelphia acquiring Goodwin and the 210th pick and the 49ers moving up to 190, where they picked Georgia TE Charlie Woerner.

The trade will save the 49ers $3,656,250 on this year’s salary cap.

Woerner looks to be a talented blocking tight end who will back up George Kittle.

“I kind of see myself as a do it all guy,” Woerner said. “A guy who can do anything and really just going to do what the team asks me to do. That’s what I did at Georgia and I’ll do whatever it takes to win a ball game. I’m excited to go to the 49ers and win some ball games.”

And With Their Final Scheduled Pick in the Draft…

The 49ers took Tennessee WR Jauan Jennings at 217.

Jennings ran a 4.72 40-yard dash, but what he lacks in speed, he makes up for in size (6’3, 215 lbs) and in yards after the catch, averaging eight.
