The Friday 5: Super Bowl Edition

The Details

• Super Bowl 58 will see a rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.
• It takes place on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 pm ET/3:30 pm PT from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV.
• The main broadcast will be on CBS. It will be Jim Nantzand Tony Romo in the booth, with Tracy Wolfson and Evan Washburn on the sidelines. Jay Feely is the special teamsanalyst and Gene Steratore is the rules analyst.
• For the first time ever, Nickelodeon will air an alternate kids-and-family friendly telecast with SpongebobSquarepants and Patrick Star in the broadcast booth.
• Reba McEntire will sing the national anthem, Post Malone will sing “America the Beautiful” and Andra Day will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

 

The Fun Facts

• The Chiefs will be in their red jerseys, and the 49ers will be in their white jerseys. Teams wearing white have gone 16-3 in the past 19 Super Bowls.
• Since Allegiant Stadium opened in 2020, the Chiefs (4-0) and the 49ers (1-0) are both undefeated at that facility.
• This is San Francisco’s eighth Super Bowl appearance, but it’s been 29 years since they’ve come out victorious. A win on Sunday would be the franchise’s sixth and would tie the Patriots and Steelers for the most in NFL history.
• Sunday will be Kansas City’s sixth Super Bowl appearance in franchise history, with the Chiefs looking to become the first team to win consecutive Super Bowls since the Patriots did so in 2004 and 2005.
• Kansas City appeared in the first-ever Super Bowl in 1967, with the average ticket price at $6. As of earlier this week, the average ticket price for this year’s game is $9,850.

 

The Halftime Show

Sunday’s halftime show will feature Usher, Usher, Usher. Anyone else do that every time you say his name, or is that just me? Anyway, back to the show. Usher’s set will be 15 minutes, which is up from the typical 13. The set list remains a mystery, but Usher did tell Billboard that “U Got It Bad” is his favorite song to sing, so…feels like that’s a strong possibility to make the cut.

 

Usher has also indicated he’ll bring out special guests and that the setlist will honor the genre of R&B. Earlier this week, Apple Music released a teaser video that featured Ludacris and Lil Jon, both of whom worked with him on “Yeah!” so I’m feeling good about hearing that one too.

More Fun Facts

• Chiefs head coach Andy Reid will be coaching his fifth Super Bowl (two of which he has won), tying him with former Dallas Cowboys head coach Tom Landry for third-most all time.
• Patrick Mahomes, 28, will become the youngest quarterback in history to start a fourth Super Bowl. With a win, Mahomes would join Tom Brady and Troy Aikman as the only QBs to win three Super Bowls before turning 30.
• This is Kyle Shanahan’s third time coaching in the Big Game. The first time he was the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons (you all remember 28-3?), with his most recent coaching appearance in Super Bowl 54 as head coach of the 49ers. He has yet to win a Super Bowl.
• San Francisco will be the first team to have five different Super Bowl-starting QBs: Brock Purdy (2023), Jimmy Garoppolo (2019), Colin Kaepernick (2012), Steve Young (1994) and Joe Montana (1981, 1984, 1988-89).
• Brock Purdy, 24, will be the third-youngest quarterback to start a Super Bowl in NFL history.

 

The Game

The San Francisco 49ers have come from behind in their two playoff victories to get to Vegas.
In Brock Purdy they trust. The Kansas City Chiefs saw ups and downs on offense throughout the season, but tight end Travis Kelce is in peak Kelce mode now, and Patrick Mahomes is, well, Patrick Mahomes.

 

The 49ers cannot afford to get down against the Chiefs, so they will need to start fast on offense and take care of the football. It will be all about Christian McCaffrey in the run game, and Deebo  Samuel as the offensive X-factor. Defensively, San Francisco is going to have to figure out a way to shore up its struggles against the run, which is no easy task when defending RB Isiah Pacheco. The San Francisco defense has also had issues in the secondary, so it will be interesting to see how they shuffle personnel in nickel packages.

 

For the Chiefs’ part, their defense – led by Chris Jones – has been playing excellent football and may even be more of a reason than Mahomes that the reigning champs are back again. It’s going to be a close one, and in a close one, with the clock winding down, are you picking against Mahomes? That’s a tough one.
