The San Francisco 49ers have spent free agency shoring up their defense and special teams. While they lost defensive star Arik Armstead – a star in the Bay Area community as well – to the Jacksonville Jaguars, overall the San Francisco defense is better than it was in 2023, at least on paper, and that defense went to the Super Bowl.
On Monday, the 49ers officially announced the following signings:
- DL Leonard Floyd to a two-year deal
- LB De’Vondre Campbell to a one-year deal
- CB Chase Lucas to a one-year deal
- OL Brandon Parker to a one-year deal
- CB Isaac Yiadom to a one-year deal
- OL Jon Feliciano re-signed to a one-year deal
Campbell, a 2021 All-Pro, provides the 49ers with insurance as Dre Greenlaw recovers from a torn Achilles that he suffered in the Super Bowl. Lucas should see most of his action on special teams, while Parker will provide depth and competition along the O-line.
The 49ers had a CB3 problem all season, so Yiadom has an opportunity to compete and bring some stability to the position, though it’s a position they will address in the draft and could continue to address in free agency.
General Manager John Lynch was clear at the NFL Combine that the 49ers were happy with Feliciano’s performance and versatility this past season, and that they wanted him back. Manifesting, my friends.
Leonard Floyd
In Floyd, the 49ers hope they have found their edge rusher opposite Nick Bosa with the kind of talent and ability they’ve been missing since Dee Ford. Floyd met with the Bay Area on Monday and talked about why Santa Clara was a preferred destination.
“I knew this was a team that was ready for a Super Bowl run,” Floyd said. “I didn’t want to go to a team and not be in a position to not be able to play in the playoffs or win a championship. So, I came here with the aspirations of coming in, helping the defense out to win games, and getting back to the big game.”
And on top of that, “…[T]he 49ers didn’t bullshit around. They was out the gate, came in with a great deal. It was a solid deal for me, and there really wasn’t no second guessing it, man. They showed that they wanted me from the jump.”
Everyone wants to feel wanted.
Floyd is also excited to reunite with new 49ers assistant coach Brandon Staley. Staley was his defensive coordinator in 2020 when he recorded a career-high 10.5 sacks while playing for the Los Angeles Rams. The two also worked together with the Chicago Bears in 2017 and 2018.
“Coach Staley man, that’s my guy, ” Floyd said. “…[H]e one of those guys, man, you ain’t even got to pay him. He’ll still show up and do his job for the game. He loves the game. He loves the game to death. He’s a diehard guy. He rides for his guys on the field, and he about getting you better, man. Anything to help a player get better, he’ll pretty much buy into it and help you out with that.”
