The Chiefs dominated the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots at Gillette stadium last night, 42 – 27! Here’s the breakdown of this historical night.
Kansas City Chiefs vs. New England Patriots
The Chiefs had spotty play in the first half. By halftime, the Patriots were up 17 to 14, and then things changed. In the second half, the Chiefs scored three touchdowns and the Patriots couldn’t get keep up.
Offense
Chiefs’ quarterback Alex Smith stepped it up in a big way finishing 28 of 35 passes for a total of 368 yards and four touchdowns. And how about Kareem Hunt? Have you heard of him yet? Hunt is the Chief’s rookie RB and it was his first NFL game and he made history! He gained 246 yards scrimmage. The most by a player in his first career game since 1970.
After fumbling to start the game, Hunt carried the ball 17 times for a total of 148 yds. He scored three of the four touchdowns.
“We just stuck together,” said Hunt. “Were like the underdogs and we wanted to crush it.”
Chiefs WR, Tyreek Hill had seven receptions for 133 yards and a touchdown.
Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady said, “[V]ery poor effort, we are going to have to do a lot better in a lot of areas. Our attitude and competitiveness, we need to have more urgency. We had it handed to us on our own field.” Brady was sacked three times. Brady only completed 16 of his 36 passes for 267 yards.
Patriots TE, Rob Gronkowski said, “They made the stops. They out played us.” Gronkowski caught two passes for a total of 33 yards.
Patriots RB, Mike Gillislee carried the ball 15 times for a total of 45 YDS which resulted in three TDs.
Defense
Chiefs outside linebacker Justin Houston came in and took over. He had two sacks, four QB hits and two tackles for loss. DB Ron Parker had 11 tackles in the game tonight.
The Patriots have built a fairly new defense and from the looks of it, they need to try to get back on track. Jordan Richards switched roles from safety to linebacker and it’s clear new Patriot Cassius Marsh is still learning the Belichick way.
Coach’s thoughts
Patriots head coach, Bill Belichick said, “We got to coach better, work harder, better attitude and lack of competitiveness especially on the offense and defense.” The Chief’s head coach Andy Reid said, “It was only 1 game out of 16. We are going to enjoy it.”
Chiefs Injuries
Chief’s safety, Eric berry was injured tonight. He has an Achilles tendon tear and Andy Reid stated, “He is going to have an MRI on Friday and they will know more.” Before he got hurt, he made seven tackles including one tackle-for-loss.
