Many former NFL players find themselves in need of assistance. Contrary to popular belief, when athletes leave the game, life is not automatically a walk in the park. Whether physical, mental, or emotional, those who have given their minds and bodies to the game, deal with hardship.

With that in mind, Hall of Fame owner Eddie DeBartolo, Jr. and the San Francisco 49ers announced plans to create the Golden Heart Fund, which will be “a charitable fund by 49ers alumni to assist other former players during times of need.” A 49ers’ alumni board that will include Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, Harris Barton, Ron Ferrari, and Brent Jones will run the fund.

Alumni in need will have the opportunity to apply to the Fund for assistance, while the board will confidentially evaluate and approve applications.

“This isn’t about a handout,” said Jones. “It’s about a hand up.”

So well said.

DeBartolo, Jr. and the York family have each pledged a $1 million donation to the fund, while the Niner organization will donate half of the proceeds from 49ers Museum tickets to Golden Heart.

Per the 49ers, financial distributions will provide “…relief for disadvantaged and distressed former players and their families nationwide, including but not limited to supporting both mental and physical health issues, disaster relief, and personal financial hardship.”

DeBartolo, Jr. was known as an owner who always took care of his players and their families, both while they played for him and after. His generosity has truly known no bounds. It is very special to see him team up with the York family to make it an official priority of the organization. These initiatives make me proud to bleed gold. Go Niners!
