Football is finally back, and the San Francisco 49ers held their first training camp practice today. It’s only day one so there’s a ways to go before we know how this team is going to look, but there were still some interesting news from the day.

Here are some Fangirl Favorites from Day One of 49ers Training Camp.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered, Solomon is Yours

Shortly after 10:30 am this morning, rookie defensive lineman Solomon Thomas signed his contract and is officially, officially a San Francisco 49er. He came out onto the practice field about 20 minutes later to join his teammates. He didn’t practice today but went through his conditioning test and then watched practice.

Thomas looked very fit, and he said that he is in the best shape of his life and ready to get out there.

“It’s going to be fun,” said Thomas. “It’s going to be a pretty dangerous D-line, so I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said they will waste no time getting Thomas reps.

“We’re ready to go tomorrow,” said Shanahan. “If he would have gotten in a little bit earlier today we would have had him go out there today.”

The First Round Pick with the Pick

Thomas said that both he and Reuben Foster have a fire inside them, and that was evident today as Foster, in his first practice, had an interception on a pass from quarterback C.J. Beathard that was intended for Kendrick Bourne.

49ers' Reuben Foster

“I know he’s been chomping at the bit for a while now,” said Shanahan. “It was good to see him go through it full speed, deal with getting aligned right and stuff. I think he got an interception out there today, which was good for him. It was a good first day.”

Ward with a Hammy; Tartt with the First Team

During yesterday’s conditioning test, safety Jimmie Ward tweaked his hamstring and is now on the PUP list. That is obviously not a Fangirl Favorite, but Jaquiski Tartt’s attitude is. He stepped into the free safety role with the first team in Ward’s absence.

“I approach the game as if I’m a starter,” said Tartt. “If somebody goes down, I’ve got to be ready.”

Shanahan is impressed with what he’s seen so far.

“I think he’s come a long way since we first got here,” said Shanahan. “He’s gotten into great shape. He did that throughout phase one, two and three. He came back yesterday even in better shape…He’s a guy who can run and hit and we’ve got to see how he plays in the system and how fast he can play once he gets out there.”

And what’s the most important thing to know about the free safety position?

“Don’t get beat deep,” said Tartt.

Um, yeah.

Going on the Offensive

Running back Carlos Hyde had a nice day and looked speedy. He said yesterday that he’s in the best shape of his life and it showed on the field. Stay tuned on this one.

The starting offensive line was: Joe Staley, Joshua Garnett, Daniel Kilgore, Brandon Fusco, and Trent Brown. This group is one to watch throughout training camp as the 49ers try to improve and fine the best combination here.

And last, but certainly not least, Marquise Goodwin had a couple of nice catches and continues to impress with his speed.
