Getting Flashy: 49ers, Goodwin Agree to Three-Year Contract Extension

By March 8, 2018 No Comments

The San Francisco 49ers continue their streak of extending contracts, signing wide receiver Marquise Goodwin to a three-year extension that will keep him in red and gold through 2021.

“From the minute Marquise joined our team, he has shown us everything we want to see in a 49er,” said general manager John Lynch in a statement. “He leads by example with a tremendous work ethic, a trait that helped him expand his repertoire as a football player and post his most successful season as a pro last year. Marquise earned this extension by coming in every day focused on doing his job and, as a result, he made himself and his teammates better.”

Goodwin is coming off the best season of his career with 962 yards and two touchdowns on 56 receptions, which is no surprise to the veteran wide receiver, who said he came to San Francisco because he knew Kyle Shanahan’s offense would put him “in the best position to be successful.”

On a personal level, it was a very difficult season for Goodwin. He and his wife lost their baby who was born stillborn at 19 weeks, while Goodwin also lost his father.

It was also a scary end to the season when Goodwin suffered what looked to be a terrible concussion in the 49ers’ final game of the season against the Los Angeles Rams. But that did not make the Olympian think twice about playing football.

“I know the game I play is tough, it’s physical, and things like that happen at some point,” said Goodwin. “But I think the people in the stands were more scared than I was, I guess from how it looked and me being unconscious for a few seconds.”

Now Goodwin is healthy and enjoying the offseason, an offseason where he has spent time in Thailand, getting to know the local wildlife.

“I got to meet a tiger face to face, actually face to back,” Goodwin told the media. “As you can imagine the adrenaline I had, I probably could have run 3.9 in the 40 had he been facing me.” Yeah, same.

Looking ahead to 2018, Goodwin said  his “goal is to stay healthy and win games, that’s it.”

Sounds like a good plan.

With the NFL free agency period beginning next week, the 49ers have extended the contracts of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, center Daniel Kilgore, offensive lineman Gary Gilliam, defensive end Cassius Marsh and linebacker Mark Nzeocha. They have a number of players who are unrestricted free agents, including running back Carlos Hyde and safety Eric Reid.

Stay tuned for updates. Go Niners!
