Another late game heartbreak for the Los Angeles Chargers, as they went up against the Philadelphia Eagles, for their third home game in a row at Stub Hub Center. They trailed just behind the Eagles, who had their first win in California since 1974. The Chargers just couldn’t catch up and the final score was 26-24.
The Chargers defense was worn out by the Eagles compelling run game of 214 yards rushing. The Chargers did not have the ball enough, with only 53 plays to 74 for Philadelphia, and you can’t expect to get a win that way. The Eagles took full advantage of their strong O. They used the Blount, Smallwood, and Clement trio to rack up rushing yards. In addition, Blounts incredible ability to break tackles didn’t help our Chargers.
But I’m not saying the Chargers defensive line wasn’t working to put the pressure on. By halftime, the Eagles were forced to go for not 1, or 2, but 3 field goal attempts.
The game started out with a touchdown by Jeffery as a result of a Chargers turnover.
The Chargers defensive line kicked up the pressure and stopped the next attempted touchdown by the Eagles. Eagles rookie kicker, Elliot, then successfully made a 45-yard field goal.
Williams stepped up for the Chargers and had great coverage and stopped the Eagles next attempt for a touchdown. Not long after, Rivers threw to Williams and he then scored a 75-yard touchdown. Next, Rivers threw a great a pass to Allen and by halftime the score was 16 – 7 with the Eagles in the lead.
The Chargers came back from halftime looking to fight back. In the third, Hayward had another great block and the Eagles were forced to kick their 4th field goal bringing the score to 19-10. And, it wasn’t long after that Ekeler ran for 35-yards and scored his first NFL touchdown.
This was an opportunity game for the Chargers with the Eagles racking up a bunch of injuries on their defense. The Eagles were missing key players in their defensive line, Ronald Darby and Fletcher Cox. And while Philip Rivers has big play passing capabilities and explosive weapons, he just wasn’t able to take full advantage of the Eagles bad pass defense that has several injuries. To add to it, the time of possession 39-21 was in favor of Philadelphia. The Chargers are lacking offensive balance and only had 13 runs and 38 passes, while the Eagles offensive line was on fire throughout the entire game. Chargers weren’t able to catch up by the bell and will walk into next week at 0 – 4.
