What’s up 12’s? I can’t wait for this week one matchup against the Packers, especially now that our front seven just got a lot scarier! The Hawks have signed DT Sheldon Richardson from the NY Jets.
In case you are unfamiliar with this defensive powerhouse, here are 5 Fun Facts about Sheldon Richardson:
1. Richardson attended Gateway Institute of Technology High School in St. Louis where he played on both sides of the ball recording six defensive TD’s and eight from the tight end position. He was named an All-American in high school and ranked as the #1 defensive tackle and #4 overall best player in the Nation according to Rivals.com. He also lettered in baseball, basketball AND track!
2. In 2012, his last season as a Missouri Tiger, Richardson recorded 75 total tackles–most out of all defensive tackles in the SEC. Very impressive!
3. The highly touted defensive force was the first defensive tackle off the board, drafted at #13 overall by the NY Jets in the 2013 NFL Draft.
4. In November of 2013, Richardson was named the NFL Rookie of the Month, becoming the first Jets player to do so since Mark Sanchez in 2009. He went on the win the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award beating out fellow phenom, Kiko Alonso.
5. Richardson was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2014 after recording eight sacks and 67 total tackles with the NY Jets.
Pro Football Focus has ranked Richardson as having the fifth best run defense grade of any lineman. I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t wait to see how he impacts an already dangerous defensive line. Go Hawks!
