Take Me (Back) Out to the Ballgame

The Home Run Derby was a blast (pun intended and hi Teoscar!), and the All-Star game included a three-run Shohei Ohtani homer. So, in other words, it was all perfect. But now, we are back to baseball as usual, as the second half of the season begins.

MLB News

  • Washington Nationals RHP Josiah Gray will have season-ending surgery to repair a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Keith Meister, who – fun fact – performed Brock Purdy’s UCL surgery. Get well soon, Josiah!
  • The Toronto Blue Jays are one step closer to getting infielder Joey Votto (ankle, lower back) back, as he is scheduled to start the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons’ Friday game.
  • The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs will start the 2025 season in Tokyo on March 18. Awesome. Now I’m stressed about the Dodgers 2024 and 2025 seasons.

NBA Trade

We’ve got a trade in the NBA! These things work very differently than football, so I’m a little confused, but maybe we can work though this together.

The Memphis Grizzles send 2021 Top-10 pick Ziaire Williams to the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets get Williams, a 2030 (yes, 2030) second-round pick via the Dallas Mavericks for Mamadi Diakite and the draft rights to Nemanja Dangubic.

Kevin Durant and Team USA

Team USA may be getting another superstar on the court. Kevin Durant practiced with the team on Friday for the first time, as he recovers from a right calf injury that he suffered during workouts last month.

Team USA plays South Sudan Saturday, in its one of two games before the
Olympics begin in Paris. Durant is questionable for the game.

Refund Please

The Chicago Fire host Inter Miami CF at Soldier Field on August 31. You may remember that Lionel Messi plays for Inter Miami. You may also remember that Messi suffered a very painful looking ligament injury to his right ankle on Sunday. I can promise you who does remember – everyone who bought tickets to the game to see Messi play.

In a, well, fire move, Chicago has said if Messi is not available, fans with tickets can claim two free tickets to their Oct. 19 Fan Appreciation Night. For those who were looking to buy tickets, those who do so between now and August 3, will be offered $250 off two or more 2025 season ticket memberships or $100 off two or more single match tickets for the Fire’s 2025 home match against Inter Miami.

That was sort of as confusing as the NBA trade, but I think I got it.
