5 Fun Facts about 49ers' C.J. Beathard

Rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard came to training camp as the #3 quarterback on the San Francisco 49ers. He worked his way to QB2, and after today’s game against the Washington Redskins, he is officially QB1.

Beathard came into the game in the first half after Brian Hoyer continued to struggle, and he brought some offense with him.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Beathard, “came and competed. The game’s not too big for this guy.” He also said he brought a “spark,” which he most certainly did.

Although the 49ers lost and fell to 0-6, Beathard showed poise and efficiency, finishing the game 19-of-36 for 245 yards, a touchdown and an interception and a rating of 72.1, He led two drives that resulted in two Carlos Hyde rushing touchdowns. He came in with the Niners down 17-0. They lost 24-26.

Pierre Garçon made two monster catches and continues to shine, no matter who is playing quarterback. He was also called for a controversial offensive pass interference call that very well could have made the difference in the game. Frankly it was a bad call and not the only first one to go against the Niners this season. Not cool.

Shanahan said he decided yesterday that Reuben Foster wouldn’t play today, as he could use another week to get better. His defense could use him. Both Arik Armstead and Aaron Lynch left the game with injuries. Here’s hoping they do not keep them out long, or at all.

I had the chance to talk to Beathard a few weeks back and get to know him better with 5 Fun Facts. He’s QB1 now, so you should too.

You will learn:

  • His favorite cuisine and his favorite things to order in that genre (send him suggestions of where to get it!)
  • Not only does he play another sport in his off time, but he also plays a musical instrument
  • His favorite television shows
  • His favorite movie (one of them is definitely on theme)
  • And some sweet words about his daughter.
