As far as early season losses go, the San Francisco 49ers watching a Packers’ Mason Crosby FG sail through the uprights as time ran out was a tough one. That being said, the team is 2-1 and there’s no rest for the weary, as Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks are coming to Levi’s Stadium on Sunday.

“Monday after the game, [we] broke everything down, saw the corrections we needed to make and on to Seattle,” 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo said. “We’ve been into it for a little while now, ready to get out to practice and get back to it.”

Onward and upward.

“This one stung a little more…but I’m over it now,” said linebacker Fred Warner. “I’m on to Seattle.”

Josh Norman

After suffering a bruised lung and spending the night in the hospital after Sunday’s game, 49ers cornerback Josh Norman did not practice on Wednesday. He was sprinting on the sidelines, and there is a chance he can play this week.

“He’s got to pass some tests throughout the week,” said head coach Kyle Shanahan. “I know he wants to, he seems a lot better today, but he’s got to pass a number of tests to be able to.”

Only One QB1

The 49ers’ offense has gotten off to a slow start the last two weeks, and it’s made for a game of catch-up. One game they won, one game they lost. In the first three weeks of the season, Garoppolo has thrown for 760 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. He also had a fumble on Sunday.

“When the whole offense is struggling, usually the quarterback does and I think we have in the first half the last two games. And I think the whole offense did a lot better in the second half and usually the quarterback does when that happens.”

That being said, Garoppolo’s play has been relatively efficient and he led what very well could have been a game-winning drive in the final moments of Week 3. That is if the 49ers’ defense had been able to stop Aaron Rodgers with 0:37 left in the game. Narrator: They couldn’t stop him.

“I think just, it really comes down to getting the play run the right way,” Garoppolo said. “I think just little details with it. Even if they show us something that we haven’t really planned for as an offense, we still have to be able to execute it. So I think there’s a million little things that we’ve got to do, coaches, players, but at the end of the day it’s all of us working together.”

Speaking of working together, rookie quarterback Trey Lance has come in situationally in Weeks 1 and 3. In Week 1, he threw a touchdown pass. In Week 3, he had a rushing touchdown. But he’s going to be used in certain situations, not to jumpstart the offense.

“Trey’s our backup quarterback,” Shanahan said. “This isn’t the preseason. We’re not just going back and forth all the time. Trey goes in for specific plays or things we want to do. Trey. week in and week out, he gets better each week the more reps he gets on scout team. But there’s not a big decision going into that each week. We put in a game plan for our starting quarterback, the backup needs to be able to do all of that if he gets hurt. And what’s cool about Trey is because of his different skillset we always keep him alive with a couple of plays on situations.”

Notes

  • Tight end George Kittle did not practice due to calf soreness, but Shanahan does not believe it will be an issue in terms of his availability on Sunday.
  • The 49ers signed cornerback Buster Skrine to a one-year deal and opened up the Injured Reserve practice windows for CB Davontae Harris and DL Maurice Hurst on Wednesday. They did not, however, open the window for wide receiver Jalen Hurd. “He’s just not there yet,” Shanahan said. “The other two guys are ready to go. They’ll practice today. And when they’re ready, we’ll get them up.”
