Defense may win championships but the offense still has to put points on the board. And in today’s 13-10 loss to the Rams, the San Francisco 49ers didn’t do that. The game ended on a quarterback sneak that turned into a Colin Kaepernick fumble. “I know I crossed the line,” said Kaepernick. “I was looking in the end zone.” Unfortunately it was impossible to tell if that was the case, even when the play was reviewed. So, game over.
With Daniel Kilgore out for the season, today was Marcus Martin’s first start at Center. I don’t discount what an important position that is and I’m sure it played a role. But the Niners’ offensive line has been a mess all season and today was no exception. Kaepernick was completely off most of the day and the offense was completely out of sync. That’s the story of the game right there. Maybe he made it in before the fumble and maybe he didn’t, but frankly, they should never have been in that position to begin with. Today was another inexcusable loss to a subpar team at home.
But I like to look at the positives on this blog and though they are at a minimum, the season’s not over yet. This team has eight games to figure out who they are and how to play at a winning level. They need to win at least seven of those games to have a chance at the playoffs but first they have to win one. Time to gut check, time to regroup, and come tomorrow, time to figure out how to #BeattheSaints. We are down but we are not out yet. Go Niners!
