What’s up Ramily. Welcome to Week 2!! How about that Week 1 Victory ?! I was in the happiest of moods getting ready to talk week two with all of you. The Rams take on the Redskins Sunday, and I’ve got a few notes about the matchup.
Los Angeles Rams vs. Washington Redskins
The Rams are coming off a FABULOUS week one victory over the Colts. The talk of the game was definitely the Rams offense as they came out looking like a brand-new group. It seems as though Jared Goff has found his place in the Sean McVay offense, with a career high 306 yards and one touchdown. He wasn’t the only one that shined. His three wide outs; Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods & Sammy Watkins had multiple receptions with Watkins and Kupp having more than 50 receiving yards each.
While Todd Gurley couldn’t get rolling on the ground with 19 carries for 40 yards, it was nice to see the coaching staff make an effort to get him involved in the passing game, as he posted five catches for 56 yards. He’s one of the team’s biggest playmakers, so it’s going to be important to get the ball in his hands as much as possible. This is a huge improvement for Gurley who finished last season averaging 2.7 receptions per game & 20 receiving yards per game. It’s still too early to tell, but this week’s performance shows that McVay’s changes to the offense this off-season will put Goff & Gurley in much better positions to be successful, thus improving their production.
Also stealing the show in week one was the Rams defense. They had four sacks, nine tackles for loss and TWO, yes TWO, impressive Pick 6’s. It looks like the Rams defensive backfield is turning out to be a major game changer.
Now looking to week two vs the Redskins, which will be a different ball game. Dare I say that the Rams had it easy against the Colts with Andrew Luck being sidelined? I’d say absolutely….and the Redskins are an entirely different animal. The Redskins are coming off a loss vs the Eagles which means they will be eager to get their first W of the season.
Kirk Cousins went 23 of 40 for 240 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Cousins struggled to get the ball down the field and this is where the Rams defense has yet another chance to be the stars of the game. It’s safe to assume Cousins will have a better showing in week two, but if they can put pressure on the quarterback they might be able to force him into some of the same week one mistakes.
The Redskins defense had one sack and one interception, turning in an average performance against the Eagles. With that being said, Goff and his offense will need to prove their week one showing was not just a fluke.
Game Prediction:
I am giving the Rams the week two W!
The Rams offense will need to show continued growth and that they can produce week in and week out. If both sides of the ball can have a strong showing like they did in week one, the Rams should have a great shot at starting the year off 2-0.
