The Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Washington Redskins at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, October 3rd. The Chiefs fell back into old ways with a slow start in the 1st half but in the 2nd, confidence kicked in and they beat the Redskins 27- 20. With four seconds left in the game, rookie kicker Harrison Butker hit a 43-yard field goal and to finish it off, Linebacker Justin Houston scored a touchdown on a fumble return.

Offense

Alex Smith had an incredible game even though our offense had a slow start. He completed 27 of 37 passes for 293 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 56 yards and scored a rushing touchdown. Kareem Hunt carried the ball 21 times for 101 yards and had four receptions for 20 yards. Travis Kelce had seven receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown. Rookie Kicker, Harrison Butker had an incredible NFL debut. He missed his 1st field goal, but quickly turned it around and made the next three including the game winning kick. Wide Receiver Albert Wilson caught 4 passes for 63 yards including the 37 yard grab that helped set up kicker Butker for the winning field goal.

The Redskins started this game off right and scored 7 points in the 1st quarter. Redskins Quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 14 of 24 passes and 2 touchdowns. He also had 7 rushes for 38 yards. Terrelle Pryor caught a 44 yard pass from cousins and scored a touchdown on the opening drive.

Defense

Our defense started pretty slow, we gave up 10 points in the 1st quarter. Than they started to connect in the second half. Linebacker Frank Zombo stepped up in place of Dee Ford who is till out with the back issue. He played nearly every snap and had  5 tackles and 1 quarterback hit.

Linebacker Derrick Johnson said, “We got stronger as the game went on. I am proud of the guys. We showed that we’re a second-half team. You want them all to be blowouts,  you want them all to be easy, but these games you will learn what kind of character you have on the team.”

Coach’s final words

Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid said, “ Everybody’s got to battle until the end and nobody’s giving up. With the parity in the league, you’re going to have a few games like this, that’s how it goes. You’re going to have to be able to go down where you don’t necessarily want to go, but you find a way to do it.”

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said “ This is supposedly the NFL’s best team at 4-0. Came up here to their place and gave them what they wanted. We understand where we are and what we have to improve on an make forward.”

Injuries

In the 1st quarter, the Chiefs lost right guard Laurent-Duvernay-Tardif to a knee injury. It is unclear if he will play in next Sunday nights game against the Texans.  The Redskins had several players leave due to injuries on the field. Redskins Rob Kelly had an ankle sprain,  Josh Norman had a rib fracture,  Montae Nickolson has AC joint injury, Quinton Dunbar had muscle cramps and Deshazor Everrett had a hamstring injury.

The Chiefs head down south to play the Houston Texans on Sunday, Oct 7th at Reliant Stadium. The Chiefs are the only team in the NFL right now that is undefeated. Let’s keep that up and go 5-0! Go Chiefs Kingdom!
