The Friday 5: December 15th

The Chargers Clean House

After their record-setting – and oh so embarrassing – 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders Thursday night, the Los Angeles Chargers fired head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco on Friday. OLB coach Giff Smith will serve as the team’s interim head coach, while director of player personnel, JoJo Wooden, will be the interim GM.

The Chargers vastly underperformed under Staley’s tenure with a record of 24-24. They went to the playoffs once in 2022, where they lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The loss came in a game that they once led by 27 points, so…not great.

The Chargers also announced that they’ve fired defensive run game coordinator/defensive line coach Jay Rodgers.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers have had one heck of a week, and we Dodgers Fangirls are VERY happy about it. First off, it’s Sho-time, as Shohei Ohtani was officially introduced as a Dodger on Thursday. And, maybe just as important, we learned that his adorable dog’s name is Decoy. We love Dodger dogs.

Next up, per multiple reports, the team is finalizing a five-year, $135 million deal with RHP Tyler Glasnow. Should the deal be completed, it finalizes a trade between the Dodgers and the Tampa Bay Rays. The trade sends Glasnow and OF Manuel Margot to LA, while the Rays get RHP Ryan Pepiot and OF prospect Jonny Deluca.

The person writing this is very into the deal. Go Dodgers!

Max Scherzer

The World Series Champion Texas Rangers will be without one of their aces to start the 2024 season, as RHP Max Scherzer had surgery for a herniated disk on Thursday and the hope is that he will be able to return sometime during the summer.

Scherzer was taken off the Rangers’ World Series roster due to back discomfort. We are sending all the healing vibes to the three-time Cy Young winner.

Week 15 NFL Injury Updates

  • Texans QB CJ Stroud (concussion) is listed as doubtful for Sunday.
  • The Chiefs will be without RB Isiah Pacheco on Sunday, as he had surgery on his shoulder.
  • Mike McDaniel said that Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s availability for Sunday is in question, and that he and Hill will talk about his ankle injury and decide how to proceed.
  • The Buffalo Bills will take on the Cowboys without safety Micah Hyde (stinger) and DE AJ Espenesa (rib).
  • Panthers TE Hayden Hurst has been placed on season-ending IR, as he has post-traumatic amnesia from a concussion he suffered in November.
