The Friday 5: September 16th

Justin Herbert

It was a Thursday night AFC West showdown, with the Kansas City Chiefs coming out on top, beating the Los Angeles Chargers, 27-24. Losing is not fun, and losing in your division is worse, but that’s not all the bad news for the Chargers.

With 5:09 left in the game, QB Justin Herbert was hit by Kansas City DE Mike Danna and was down for some time. He missed one play, came back, and was drilled again. He did, however, stay in the game.

Per head coach Brandon Staley on Friday, Herbert “has a fracture to his rib cartilage and good news is, it’s better than having a fracture to his bone.” His status is day-to-day.

Buccaneers at Saints

New Orleans is a fun trip. Well, it’s a fun trip for everyone but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have not won a game there since Dec. 31, 2017. That feels like a long time, and it’s not going to get an easier, as the Bucs may be without WR Chris Godwin and LT Donovan Smith for Sunday’s game at Caesars Superdome.

Godwin injured his hamstring in Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, while Smith hyperextended his right elbow. It was Godwin’s first game back since tearing his ACL and MCL in Week 15 of last year. Neither player participated in practice this week.

The game kicks off on Sunday at 1 pm ET/10 am PT on FOX.

Jamal Adams

As first reported by NFL Network, Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams will need season-ending surgery to repair an injury to his quadriceps tendon that he suffered in Monday night’s win over the Denver Broncos. Adams was placed on injured reserve on Thursday.

The injury came in the game’s second quarter while blitzing Broncos’ quarterback, and his former teammate, Russell Wilson. Adams was carted off the field, with head coach Pete Carroll calling it a “serious” injury after the game.

More NFL Injury News

  • After suffering an ankle injury in Week 1, Miami Dolphins RT Austin Jackson will go on short-term IR, which means he will miss at least four games.
  • Atlanta Falcons running back Damien Williams is out for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. Williams is dealing with a Week 1 rib injury.
  • San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks with a groin injury that also caused him to miss Week 1. Kyle Shanahan said it will be a game-time decision.

Ozzie Albies Back for the Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves are on a hot streak, and it’s getting hotter, as they’ve activated second baseman Ozzie Albies off the 60-day injured list. Albies broke his foot in June.

Before getting hurt, Albies was hitting .244 with eight home runs and 33 RBIs. The Braves currently sit one game behind the New York Mets in the National League East, as they begin a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday.
