49ers and Convoy of Hope Spread Holiday Cheer to Community

The holidays are a wonderful time, but they can also be a very difficult time for those in need. In that spirit, the San Francisco 49ers had their biggest community event of the year on December 5. They teamed up with Convoy of Hope, a humanitarian relief organization, to put on a resource fair for over 1,100 Bay Area families at Levi’s Stadium.

“I’ve kept a rapport with Convoy of Hope ever since my trip [to Haiti] and have been to a couple of events since, and think they’re great,” said Tight End Vance McDonald who took the aforementioned trip to Haiti in 2015. “They’re unbelievable at giving back and sharing hope with people across the world. To be able to give people hope this holiday season, to use our platform to give back to those in need, I’m just thankful to be a part of it.”

Attendees received a variety of services and everything was absolutely free. Services included health screenings, dental screenings, haircuts, and family portraits. In addition, guests were given a hot meal, shoes, cold weather gear, groceries, and gifts for the holidays.

Children were also treated to a variety of holiday activities, including spending quality time with Santa Claus, a.k.a. Punter Bradley Pinion.

“To come here and see these smiles, it brings you back to reality and lets you know what’s really important,” said Wide Receiver and Walter Payton Man of the Year Award nominee Torrey Smith. “I think an event like this really helps motivate underprivileged kids so that they can overcome the odds.”

The Niner players were well-represented with the players mentioned above, as well as Linebacker Ahmad Brooks, Tight End Garrett Celek, Running Back Mike Davis, Defensive Tackle Quinton Dial, Running Back Shaun Draughn, Linebacker Eli Harold, Quarterback Christian Ponder, Cornerback Keith Reaser, Safety Eric Reid, Linebacker Marcus Rush, Safety Vinnie Sunseri, and Offensive Lineman John Theus. The players were giving out gifts, signing autographs, and engaging with everyone.

As fans, it’s easy to get caught up in the 1-11 record and tough season, but it’s great to see our guys in the red and gold doing so much good and bringing smiles and help to those who need it. At the end of the day, it’s football and it’s a game. Giving back provides the moments that matter most. Happy holidays and Go Niners!
