The Patriots are Coming. 49ers Have to Grin and Bear It. (NFL Week 11)

You guys, the 49ers almost won on Sunday! Chip Kelly said there are no participation trophies in the NFL but I have to disagree a little – plus participation trophies are the only ones the Niners are going to get this year.

The 49ers played well! They didn’t fold. They didn’t get blown out. They didn’t give up 1 million rushing yards. To me, these are moral victories.

Next up, our guys in the red and gold take on the the 7-2 New England Patriots, who are coming off a loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

In this week’s Talking Touchdowns game preview, I take a look at the matchup, focusing on:

  • The Patriots’ defense and how the Niners will stack up. Ranked 16th overall, the Pats D is hardly terrible, but last week, the Seahawks scored on seven of their nine drives, had 23 first downs and were six for 12 on third downs. For the 49ers, Colin Kaepernick had another solid start passing for 210 yards and a TD and rushing for 55 yards and a TD. The Niners should be able to score in this game, but then again, so should the Pats.
  • The improvements in the 49ers’ defense. They only gave up 80 rush yards and they forced two fumbles and two interceptions and had 10 PBUS.
  • Sadly, they folded when it counted in the last 1:55, but you know, baby steps. Patriot’s quarterback and Bay Area native Tom Brady and his ninth ranked offense will be at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday and will probably negate all that progress, but maybe not! Since returning from suspension, Brady has thrown for 1635 yards, 12 TDs and only one INT. So, maybe yes.
  • And, of course, my game prediction.
