The Los Angeles Chargers vs. the Denver Broncos

This Monday Night Football was a historical game in NFL history with Anthony Lynn and Vance Joseph being the first two African Americans to make their coaching debuts in the first regular season game. Which by the way, Lynn actually won a few Super Bowls playing in Denver. And to make things even more interesting, Chargers ex-head coach, Mike McCoy, got to face his former team as the new Broncos offensive coordinator.

Rookie Yunghoe Koo’s field goal was good, or so it seemed. With just seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Broncos head coach Vance Joseph called for a time-out. The second time around, Shelby Harris blocked the kick. The Broncos took the opening night win at Mile High Authority Stadium this Monday night.

The Chargers O Lines Late Start was Too Little Too Late:

Philip Rivers’ late start was just a little too late to catch up. He ended the game with 192 yards, 3 touchdowns and an interception. Rivers struggled to find receivers and convert, leaving the Broncos with a 24-7 lead at the end of the third but came back fighting with the O line in the fourth. Ultimately, the fight was too little too late to take the W.

Melvin Gordon helped to carry the team with 54 on 18 carries and 5 catches on 25 yards and a touchdown… and what an impressive touchdown that was! Melvin showed off more than hops in the end zone – he celebrated with some fire dance moves.

Denver’s New Starting Quarterback Starting Things Off on the Right Foot:

Trevor Siemian had a hot start with a couple of good completions in the first half, really making the connection with Bennie Fowler. Together Siemian and Fowler scored two touchdowns. Siemian also scored the first rushing touchdown of his career, dodging a sack opportunity missed from Chargers star defensive lineman, Joey Bosa.

Chargers Defensive Stars Need to Pick Up the Pace:

Although Bosa and Ingram had 1.5 sacks each, they had a slow start, missing a few important tackles. At some critical times the secondary gave up some big plays that allowed the Broncos to continue their drive.
